New Years - Capital Area Budokai
The VKR held its annual New Year's event for 2020 on January 4th. It began with a Makiwara Sharei performed by Bill Reid, head instructor. It was followed by a number of challenging shooting contests. Bill's performance and contest winners are captured in these photos.
New Years - Meshin Kyudojo
Also in January, VKR members attended an annual Shinenshakai at the Kyudodojo located in Apex, NC which was hosted by Dan DeProspero Sensei, Renshi, Rokudan. Our Jan achieved a successful hit during the fan shooting contest.
The 2019 Washington, DC Cherry Blossom festival (Sakura Matsuri) was held on April 13. We once again put on a Kyudo demonstration (makiwara shooting). The weather was perfect and the crowd was steady throughout the day!
Joint Kyudo Practice - Virginia
In May the VKR held a joint-practice with members from the New York/New Jersey Kyudo Kai. We were very fortunate again to have Dan DeProspero, Renshi, 6th Dan, serve as the senior instructor. Because of space constraints, this event was restricted to only renmei members and invited guests. This was a two-day event with practice held at the Capital Area Budokai on Saturday and, at the Chomei Dojo (Bill's place) at King George, VA, on Sunday. It served as a great opportunity to gain deeper insight into what Kyudo is all about and, to promote camaraderie and friendship among the renmei members and guests.
2019 International Kyudo Federation (IKYF) American Seminar
This seminar was held at the University of South Carolina, Upstate, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on June 24-26. Attendees received three days of comprehensive kyudo training from three master instructors (hanchi hachi-dan) from Japan. It also included a banquet for socializing and a shooting contest (taikai). Testing for rank (shinsa) was held on June 27. Congratulations to the following VKR members on their promotion.

The New York/NewJersey Kyudo Kai (Affiliate of the Virginia Kyudo Renmei) hosted its 7th annual, joint Kyudo practice on October 12&13, 2019. Thirty four individuals participated which made this the largest one held to date. The October 13 session included a Taikai which was held in accordance with the rules set by the International Kyudo Federation and the American Kyudo Renmei.
